BTEC First Diploma in Performing Arts: Level Two

A BTEC First Diploma is a practical, work related course. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based in realistic workplace situations to introduce you the world of a Performing Arts professional.  The Young Apprenticeship Programme incorporates 50 days of Work Experience in high profile performing arts venues, many of which are in the West End.  This unique programme is the only one of its kind locally and selects male and female students from all Secondary Schools in Greenwich.

What is it worth?

Four GCSE grades A* - C

How many lessons a week will I get?

Two full days taught off site at Shooters Hill Post 16 Campus

What are the entry requirements?

All students must have:

  • Key stage 2 national curriculum test results at Level 4 in Maths, Science and English or higher.
  • Key stage 3 Teacher Assessment levels in core subjects add up to at least 14.
  • A good attendance record – usually above the school average.
  • Evidence that the parents or guardians support the pupil’s choice.
  • Commitment and motivation towards the work-based route.
  • Commitment and aptitude for performing arts.

It is also desirable that students show:

  • ability or aptitude to sing in tune;
  • ability or aptitude to dance;
  • interest and enthusiasm for working in the performance arts sector.
What is the course made up of?

You can choose to specialise in either Dance, Acting or Production. Whichever discipline you choose, you will complete 5 units:

  • Acting, Dance or Production
  • A final major project at the end of year 2 (usually a musical)
  • The Performing Arts Business
  • Musical Theatre
  • One further specialist unit e.g. Make-up
How is the course assessed?

All the units are assessed and graded on a Pass, Merit or Distinction basis. An overall grade for the qualification is awarded.

What can I do at the end of the course?

A BTEC First Diploma prepares you for employment and with further training or study you can go into careers in the Performing Arts. It also gives you a good grounding to go onto a more advanced course such as the BTEC National Diploma.
