Opportunities

  • Active learning using a variety of approaches including: investigations, individualised learning, group work, practical work, class teaching, all using a variety of modern text books and resources.
  • Wide access to new technology, including the mathematical skills within modern computer applications. Students use computers mathematically both inside and outside lesson time.
    Department's involvement in the KS3 strategy provides students with a good platform to improve their number skills.
  • A Mathematics club for all years and abilities.
  • After-school revision for GCSE and SATS classes.
  • After-school seminars for A-Level mathematicians.
  • Personal coaching and advice given by mentors within the department.
  • Opportunities provided for students to take responsibility for representing the subject and department to the public in Open Sessions and Maths Challenge Competition.
  • Induction programmes allowing students to have a smoother transfer from Year 6 into Year 7 and also from GCSE into their A-Level course.
  • Modular format A-Level course allows students to achieve the best grade possible.
  • A high level of support is offered to students in NEGUS who wish to improve their GCSE grade in mathematics.
  • ALAN (Adult Literacy and Numeracy) Level 1 and 2 is on offer for students who need a qualification in mathematics or as a part of the GNVQ Course.
  • GCSE Statistics offered to more students.  Those with level 6 and above considered in Year 10.
  • AS Further Maths offered to high achieving AS Maths students.
Successes

  • Students regularly going to university to read mathematically-related degree courses.
  • Outstanding individual achievements including SOME pupils gaining an A grade in their GCSE mock exams in Year 10.
  • Sustained improvement in Key Stage 3 Standard Assessment Test with many more pupils achieving level 5 to 8.
  • Involvement of Year 7 in the Maths Challenge, with students achieving pleasing results, including one student gaining a Gold Award.
  • After school clubs/extension lessons having a positive influence on students attitude, enjoyment and attainment in Maths, especially Year 9.
  • The inclusions policy successfully implemented across all abilities especially in Years 7 and 8.
  • A considerable number of students achieving at least 'C' grade in the GCSE retake.
    Greater uptake of A-Level and AS-Level courses.
  • Successful delivery of core skills within the GNVQ framework.
  • A complimentary OFSTED report for mathematics at KS3, KS4 and post 16.
  • Introduction of A Level Further Maths.
