Homework policy
Aims:
- To encourage students to study at home to complement their learning within school.
- To develop skills which enable students to become independent learners.
Principles
- The school’s homework policy should be consistent with the school’s Equal Opportunities and Teaching and Learning policies.
- Homework should be differentiated so that the needs of all students are met.
- Homework should be set regularly, checked and missed work followed up.
- Homework may consist of written work, oral work, extension work, re-drafting, consolidation of classwork, catching up on lessons missed, learning, reading, research and the opportunity to do original work. If no specific homework is set students are expected to do revision of classwork and reading at home.
- Students are given the opportunity to complete homework at the end of each day at Homework Club in the library.
Practice:
Staff:
- Subject staff to check all homework in line with their departmental homework policies.
- Tutors support the homework policy by: supporting students in organisation, checking diaries each week and follow up as appropriate.
- Deputy Head (Curriculum) is responsible for drawing up homework timetables.
- Subject staff are responsible for ensuring that students record homework in their diaries.
- Homework is monitored by senior and middle managers.
- Non completion of homework is followed up by subject teachers using appropriate sanctions.
Students:
- Homework is an essential aspect of students’ learning and is compulsory.
- Planners are provided for each student to record their homework tasks.
- Homework must be recorded in planners before leaving the lesson.
Parents:
- All parents are informed of the school’s homework policy and are expected to support it by ensuring that their daughters/sons complete their homework regularly.
- Parents’ information evenings are held to support parents in working with their daughters.
- Parents can support this policy by checking the planner weekly and signing it, by ensuring a quiet place to work, a regular routine, the necessary equipment, and by encouraging the use of the Library and Homework Club.
